Alex Black is a Canadian Director and Photographer living in Paris.

Having lived as both a chameleon and an outsider in different cities since a young age, she learned to embrace novelty under parameters of familiarity, balancing conformity with radical self-expression to question the status quo. The cultural themes in her work are an intersection of the European and North American cities she grew up in including Paris, London, Montreal, and New York.

The experimental nature in her work in part stems from being a self-taught photographer where the limitations from trial and error with new photographic tools are embedded in the process-based approach as a gesture to developing a new visual language. She is interested in the frames ability in capturing a fragmented perspective of the world which disorients the viewer of reality. Her favourite pursuit is creating imagery that leaves only a few clues triggering the viewer to ask a series of questions to understand the subject matter photographed.

Her often dreamstate imagery draws inspiration from the visual language of abstract art to create representations that exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. In there lies a tension between abstraction and figuration. Fashion is used as a tool for its shapes, colours and forms to achieve an effect and are usually simplified or schematized.
